But the Vatican will have to confront an uncomfortable issue: in the world of Twitter the barometer of relevancy and engagement is the number of followers you can attract. If the Pontiff is to be seen as relevant to today’s society as, say, the Twitter avatars of Lady Gaga or Barack Obama, he needs to be seen to be followed as much. The problem is that these doyens of popular engagement have wildly inflated Twitter follower numbers: two thirds of both Barack Obama and Lady Gaga’s followers are fake or inactive according to the Status People’s Fake Follower Check.

The Vatican’s problem is that in establishing @pontifex it has entered an unreal world, one whose currency is a popularity that can be bought rather than earned. And by choosing to engage with this world the Vatican is presented with a presentational problem: if it cannot compete with popular celebrities in the Twitter arena it will seem irrelevant in that sphere, undermining the very premise upon which this technology is being adopted. And if it competes with these Twitter profiles on their terms – by accumulating fake and inactive followers – it risks undermining the Pope’s moral authority.And this is a remarkable vulnerability in Lombardi’s media strategy, as anyone can direct followers to another user’s account.

A check on Status People’s Fake Follower Check on Tuesday night revealed that almost half of the Pope’s followers are either fake or inactive. These could have come from either supporters or detractors depending on their motives. But the fact remains that only 51% of the Pope’s followers can be verified as genuine users of Twitter.

So what does it mean that the Pope’s first tweet will reach 300,000 phantom users? On the positive side it means that it will reach 300,000 genuine subscribers during Advent, in addition to those who will be able to access it and question him without following. But the larger implications remain focused on the vulnerability of the Vatican’s good PR to be turned on its head. One imagines that the decision to create @pontifexwas arrived at after some considerable deliberation, but one cannot help but wonder if it was the wisest decision to make.
